This contemporary Oushak Kilim (150 x 100 cm) is a vibrant example of modern Anatolian weaving, combining traditional symbolism with a bold, saturated color palette. Roughly 10–15 years old, it remains in excellent condition, showcasing the enduring craftsmanship of the Uşak region, historically famous for its medallion and star motifs.
Design & Symbolism
The kilim features three prominent central medallions set against a deep indigo field, each rich with ancestral “Mother Goddess” imagery:
Central Medallions: These rectangular panels contain stylized Elibelinde (hands-on-hips) motifs, the ancient Anatolian symbol for motherhood, fertility, and abundance.
Border Patterns: The outer black border is framed by a Waterway (Su Yolu) zigzag, representing the flow of life and spiritual purification.
Protective Accents: Small, scattered geometric shapes throughout the field—such as the Pitrak (burdock) and “S” motifs—are traditional talismans intended to ward off the “evil eye” and bring good fortune to the home.
